COUNSELOR TRAINING

One of the most significant problems resulting from the perpetuation of the model minority myth is the cycle of poor mental health. When Asian American students are put under pressure from the incredibly unachievable expectations thrust upon them, they are also unable to seek help from counselors because school counselors are often also under the impression that Asian American students don't need help with their mental health. To help counselors understand the significance of their actions, AAMHI gave counselors in Montgomery County Public Schools photonovels from AAHI to train them to best address the needs of Asian American students. Next, AAMHI garnered support from county councilmember Kristin Mink, whose support was invaluable in advocating to DHHS. With their help, we developed and implemented a training module for all schools counselors in MCPS to sensitize them on Asian American stereotying and microagressions.
